Did someone say citrus-chile butter?

Much like Jack White, puppies, The Golden Girls, my boyfriend’s tomato sauce and the numbers 16, 25 and 144, some things are perfect just the way they are.

The greatest of these is butter.

I don’t believe there is anything that you can do to make butter better, but adding citrus zest, jalapeño and herbs as Southern Living’s latest (incredibly useful) issue suggests doesn’t hurt at all.

Combine:

  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 tablespoons lime zest
  • 2 tablespoons lemon zest
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon seeded and minced jalapeño
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme

Season with salt and pepper to taste and reshape into a log, swan, cow on a motorcycle, wreath, ball, star, your middle initial or your home state (good luck Illinoisans). Cover and chill until ready to serve.

Perhaps with flank steak, grilled onions and cherry tomatoes?

Tomorrow is not only President Obama’s birthday, it is also Kitchen Oddity’s first birthday! Woooo! I’ll be celebrating both with Amy Sedaris’s chocolate sheet cake recipe — post to come soon.
